Wisconsin Rapids, WI- Wednesday, February 13th. The Rafters have increased the number of University of Illinois players on the 2013 team by announcing the signings of right-handed pitcher John Kravetz and infielder Michael Hurwitz. The most recent signees will join fellow Illinois teammate and returning pitcher Ronnie Muck in Wisconsin Rapids this summer. Illinois, which finished the 2012 season with a 28-25 overall record, is set to face Tennessee Tech this Friday afternoon to open up the 2013 NCAA baseball season.
RHP-John Kravetz, 6’4”, 215 lbs (L/R) Sophomore, Illinois
Sophomore John Kravetz will toe the mound for the Illini this spring after breaking the school record for wins by a freshman with an 8-3 mark as the No. 2 starter last year. Kravetz finished less than an inning behind the team leader for most innings pitched in 2012 with 87 2/3 while posting the second-most strikeouts on the team with 45 and walking only 19 batters. In 15 appearances, 14 starts, Kravetz posted a 4.72 earned run average while limiting opponents to a .258 batting average.
Kravetz attended Mount Carmel High school where he was named the 2011 Northwest Illinois Times Baseball Player of the Year as a senior. He was listed as the No. 22 overall prospect in the state of Illinois and the No. 13 pitcher by Prep Baseball Report prior to his senior season. His senior year he posted an 11-4 record with a 2.17 ERA and struck out 91 batters in 84 1/3 innings. For his accomplishments he also was named to the All-Area second team by the Chicago Sun Times as well as well as Illinois High School Baseball Association third-team All-State. Kravetz is a native of Lansing, Illinois.
IF-Michael Hurwitz, 5’6”, 185 lbs (S/R) Sophomore, Illinois
Hurwitz will begin his sophomore season with the Illini after appearing in 28 games and making eight starts as a freshman. Hurwitz was ranked the No. 58 prospect in the state of Illinois by Prep Baseball Report coming out of high school. His senior season he batted .355 with a .512 on-base percentage, 24 runs scored and 17 runs batted in. As a junior he posted a .438 batting average with 27 stolen bases and 45 runs scored. His performance in high school earned him Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A All-State honors in both his junior and senior seasons. He was also named an All-Central State 8 selection in 2010 as well as being named to the CABA World Series All-Tournament team after leading his team to a second place finish. Hurwitz is a native of Pleasant Plains, Illinois.
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters are members of the 16-team summer collegiate Northwoods League.
