Wisconsin Rapids, WI August 7, 2010. A three run top of the ninth for the Wisconsin Woodchucks proved the knockout punch in a 10-7 loss for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Saturday night.
Tied at seven into the top of the ninth, reliever Howie Heinrich walked two straight batters with one out. The lefty picked the runner off of second base for out number two and the tie appeared to be intact. But back-to-back singles broke the tie and a two out ground ball double off of Steve Godawa broke the game open.
Rafters starter Dan Johnson struggled out of the gates. The first three Woodchucks reached base and eventually scored to put the Rafters in an early 3-0 hole. Johnson allowed just one more run through the fifth inning with six strike outs. Johnson though hit a speed bump to start the sixth. A lead walk and a home run gave the lead back to the ‘Chucks, who tacked on another run for a second three run inning.
Despite the loss, the biggest inning of the night belonged to the Rafters. Trailing 4-1 into the fourth, Brian Embery started an eventual four run inning with a two out RBI single. Then with two on Cody Koback put the Rafters ahead 5-4 with a three run home run hooked around the pole in left to cap the huge inning.
After Johnson’s struggles in the sixth, back to back wild pitches pulled the Rafters into a tie in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Cornwell led off the inning with a single and Derek Brown walked. Cornwell stole second and went to third with a wild pitch. Brown then swiped second before the wild pitches tied it up.
Heinrich takes the loss, his first of the season, as the Rafters fall to 7-22 on the second half and drop the season series with the Woodchucks four games to six.
