Wisconsin Rapids, WI August 11, 2010. Before the rain fell in buckets Friday night the Eau Claire Express scored runs in bunches to beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 11-1 in a rain shortened six inning contest.
After an early run in the first off of starter Cody Koback, the Express pounced on Koback with eight hits and a walk to score six runs in the third inning. Both Nathan Orf and Lucas Herbst had a pair of hits in the inning as Eau Claire sent twelve to the plate.
The Express tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth off of reliever Brandon Van Dam. Matt Cornwell came on to nail down the final two outs of the inning, and then worked a one-two-three fifth to continue his string of five and two thirds scoreless innings.
A lone Rafters run came on a Ryan Palermo solo home run leading off the fifth. Palermo’s third home run of the year gives the Santa Barbara Gaucho twelve RBI on the season and is his eighth hit over the past five games.
Express starter Brad Goldberg held the Rafters to just five total hits through six innings. But he also induced a double play ball in each of the first three innings to keep the Rafters from any sort of offensive success.
With the Rafters and Express finishing six innings, the game is considered a completed contest. All tickets used on the night are used in full and are not eligible for a rain check.
The Rafters last home stand of the season continues Saturday August 14th with the last Fireworks Extravaganza of the season presented by Veolia. Game time is 7:05 but make plans to stick around for the post game fireworks. Gates open at 6:05.
