La Crosse, WI August 9, 2010. By the time Monday’s three hour and forty minute slugfest between the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters and La Crosse Loggers ended the score looked like anything but a baseball game as the Rafters fell 24-12.
While the teams traded multi-run innings all night, the Loggers landed the first and most decisive blow, with an 11 run first. After the Rafters took a 2-0 lead to kick off the game, La Crosse sent 16 to the plate in their first at bat. With only four hits in the inning, the Loggers used six walks and three hit batters to jump on the first three Rafters pitchers and post the double digit inning.
A total of seven Rafters toed the rubber at Copeland Park on the night. All but the final reliever of the night, Matt Cornwell, allowed two or more runs. The Loggers scored in each of the first six innings before Cornwell retired six in a row, including three strike outs.
With runners on in each of the first seven innings, the Rafters offense never got the memo that the game was a blow-out. Evan Laude led the way to the Rafters first double digit game with six RBI on a 5-for-5 night. Cody Koback continued to hit, notching three straight singles to begin a 3-for-5 night. The speedy outfielder also scored four times.
The loss goes to starter Garrett Branske who retired just two batters in the first inning. Branske falls to 0-3 on the season as the Rafters dip to 7-23 in the second half. Against the Loggers this season the Rafters are now 3-6.
Tuesday the Rafters return home to take on the Loggers for the final time in 2010. Matt Baudino is slated to start for the Rafters. Gates open at 6:05, first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Witter Field.
