Wisconsin Rapids, WI August 10, 2010. Strikes and third outs proved elusive for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters for the second straight night as the Rafters fell 11-5 to the La Crosse Loggers.
After allowing just a single run through three innings, Matt Baudino allowed a lead-off home run in the fourth to spot the Loggers a one run lead. After settling in to retire the next two batters he faced, a two out single extended the inning. Nine batters and six walks later La Crosse led 9-1. Baudino walked five straight before a double and single with two outs blew the game open.
Brandon Van Dam walked another batter in that fated fourth inning. The big right-hander allowed two more runs over two innings of work, notching one strike out. Matt Cornwell worked two scoreless innings of relief for the second straight night recording a strike-outs and a walk. Beck Wheeler retired the Loggers in the top of the ninth with a pair of strike outs.
A two base wild pitch brought the Rafters their first run in the top of the first. Then, after six straight scoreless innings, the Rafters strung together four hits and used a Loggers error to score four in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Palermo and Brad Hallberg each singled in runs, while Derek Brown doubled to drive home two more and set the final at 11-5.
In total on the night the Rafters walked 11, including eight by Baudino who suffers his seventh loss of the season. The Loggers issued eight walks but allowed only eight hits through nine to keep the Rafters from scoring.
