Weekend of February 15th through February 18th
Wisconsin Rapids, WI – Tuesday, February 19th. Opening weekend of the 2013 college baseball season didn’t disappoint as your 2013 Rafters impressed while posting some noteworthy numbers.
Stell continues to roll in sophomore debut
OF Taylor Stell (So. - Texas) continues to build upon his stellar freshman season by racking up a .375/.538/.375 line while nabbing three stolen bases in a 3-game series with Sacramento State. The Longhorns kept it close by winning 2 of the 3 games by a combined three runs.
Defending champs Arizona roll as Bill picks up first win of the season
LHP Augey Bill (Jr. - Arizona) made his lone appearance count as #20 Arizona dominated at home and extended their winning streak to 14 games by plating a combined 43 runs in their 3-game series against Coppin State. Bill was lights out on the bump in giving up 0 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. He would earn the win by striking out three, walking none and allowing just one hit while facing a total of 11 batters in middle relief in the final game of the series.
Despite Nebraska’s rough start, Bublitz productive on the bump
The state of California wasn’t a welcoming paradise to the visiting Cornhuskers as Nebraska drops two games to Cal State Fullerton and a game each to CSU Bakersfield and USC. Neverthless, RHP Luke Bublitz (Jr. – Nebraska) came to play earning a 3.38 ERA in his lone appearance. Bublitz gave up five hits but struck out four to the tune of one earned run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Illinois’ tandem efficient in hotly contested series
The Illini lost a pair of one-run heartbreakers, including a walk-off home run loss in the final game, to Tennessee Tech down in Cookeville, TN. Luck wasn’t on their side but IF Michael Hurwitz (So. - Illinois) was and he made his presence known hitting .333/.467/.500, scoring three runs, knocking in two doubles, and snagging two steals in the 3-game series. Fellow teammate RHP Ronnie Muck (Jr. - Illinois) chipped in during his two appearances on the mound by allowing one hit and 0 earned runs in his brief 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
RIVALRY RENEWED (*marquee matchup)
Keep an eye out for three of your Rafters as traditional powers and former Big 12 rivals, Texas and Nebraska, square off in their first 3-game series as inter-conference foes February 22-24 down in Austin, TX.
